Longmeadow DEI Advisory Committee votes unanimously to update parking and public space disability icons. The committee, chaired by Tammye Erb, voted unanimously to become the first town in Western Massachusetts to adopt the Accessible Icon Project, a symbol redesigned to convey dignity and alignment with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Erin Murray, an Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy at Western New England University, presented the initiative; Connecticut passed similar legislation in 2017 and New York in 2013.
The committee outlined next steps including contacting Town Manager Lyn Simmons for specifications, engaging the Select Board and Longmeadow High School students, and exploring fundraising to complete the project.
