Finance Committee votes to maintain opposition to fiber project

Finance Committee · Meeting of May 5, 2026

LONGMEADOW — Finance Committee votes 4-2 to maintain opposition to $8.6 million fiber appropriation. Chair Erica Weida presented analysis showing total construction costs estimated between $25.7 million and $30 million, with proposed subscriber rates ranging from $83 to $149 monthly depending on take rates. The committee's non-recommendation of Article 7 cites seven concerns including rate-setting procedures, risk allocation, debt-service duration, and lack of clarity on taxpayer returns.

The $8.615 million appropriation would cost the average household $2,100 over 20 years.
