SELECT BOARD PERMITS REMOVAL OF SHADE TREES ON WILLIAMS STREET

Select Board · Meeting of April 16, 2026

Longmeadow Select Board removes trees, advances fiber project. The board unanimously permitted removal of two shade trees at 458 Williams Street to widen the school entrance roadway, following a presentation by engineer Jean Christy confirming the 35-inch Black Oak poses an imminent safety hazard. Simultaneously, the board unanimously adopted responses to seven Finance Committee questions about the proposed $8.6 million municipal fiber optic network, with an initial rate of $90 monthly.

Member Vineeth Hemavathi emphasized that over 40 municipal light plants operate in the Commonwealth and fiber infrastructure lasts 50-plus years, potentially reducing rates after 20-year debt payoff. The fiber project advances to the May 12 town meeting vote.
